Werkbericht (Work Report) No. 3 — Project km497

Typical Swiss, typical French, typical German, typical Dutch: how much truth is there in such country-specific clichés? Are there distinctive characteristics in the design which allow us to recognize a country? Or are there no appreciable visual differences between those countries any more, thanks to the "Global village"?
In a project of the Designlabor Gutenberg, lecturer and students examined those questions by following the River kilometres down the Rhine. They made four stops: at Basel, Strasbourg, Main and Rotterdam, here they looked around and gathered considerable volumes of material. The present report documents and comments the results of their research. Is shows few similarities and many differences. Summing up, we can say this: no matter how shortened a cliché, there is usually a grain of truth in it. As for the "Global village" – it is true that the world is moving closer together. But those places where we would expect a lot of agreement are just the ones where the charm of the region is at its most persistent.
