Werkbericht (Work Report) No. 8 — eight views on dutch design edu

Is there a relationship between the visual language of a country and its national mentality? The focus of this question was on the Netherlands, whose design has achieved international reputation over the past decades for its bold experimental and functional creativity. Is this a result of the everyday climate of the designer, or of the focal points in teaching, or of the flat country or the openness of society? The answers are complex and unambiguous at the same time. This was the result of a series of interviews held in 2007 and 2008, which are documented in the present work report.
We hear the views of the following teachers: Peter Bilak (KABK, den Haag), Anniek Brattinga, Karel Martens (Werkplaats Typografie, Arnhem), Gabriele Götz (then St. Joost, Breda, now Uni Kassel). The following Art Directors are included: Daniel Gross (catalog tree, Arnhem), Fred Kramer HEMA, Amsterdam). Furthermore, we also hear the views of two truly distinguished experts with a vast amount of experience: David Quay (Teacher and Typographer, Amsterdam) und Jan van Toorn (Teacher, Designer and Author, Amsterdam).
