Wilfried Elfers: Principles of design 1968—1985
Wilfried Elfers: Principles of design 1968—1985

The goal of teaching cannot be just to achieve presentable results. Quick results can be achieved without too much trouble with well-chosen tasks focussing on the target. Results can document success; successful learning, however, happens in the process. Therefore, the series of exercises of which some examples are shown here, don't aim for previously determined results. They are not meant to be tasks requiring a definite solution, they are questions, a way of looking at a problem.  Theme and exercises are presented by the design media themselves, and by their creative handling.

wanderlust. changing visual identities
With the ?translations? symposia hosted at School of Design Mainz, Germany the Department of Communication Design analyses and discusses current design issues in regular intervals. The most recent project ?wanderlust. changing visual identities? (German title ?fernweh. positionen zur identität im design ?) reviews the positions between near and far, the known and the unknown. Which individual strategies are adopted by designers in light of an increasingly globalised culture that consumes individual statements at fast pace? Are visual design concepts in any way able to contribute to shaping cultural identity?
