The project "33 degrees North 44 degrees east" is based on newspaper articles dealing with the war in Iraq (20.03.03 - 01.05.03). The work displays a newspaper which consist of seven single posters. It developed from a discussion about the use and function of text, photography and illustration in newspapers. The title 33 Grad Nord 44 Grad Ost describes the coordinates of Iraq. Newspaper pictures and texts are processed and reshaped to enable information structures and to evolve new contents: The first two pages make use of articles taken from the german newspaper "Die Welt", in which war victims are mentioned. In the first poster, all names and numbers of the deaths are removed from the articles. The second page, in contrast, depicts solely the names and numbers from the first poster. The third and fourth pages focus on the question of picture manipulation. The fifth poster displays poems, composed using words from newspaper articles. Poster six draws parallels between war and video games. The repetition of human figures results in the individual becoming a pawn in the hand of strategies. Poster seven developed from an interest in military action and strategy. It is based on an original photograph. The characters of the original are replaced and form a technical drawing in order to concentrate on certain elements and increase their importance.
